What Are Paint Thickeners and Why Are They Important?
Paint thickeners are rheological additives that allow the viscosity of a formulation to be adjusted. Their main function is to prevent the settling of pigments and fillers, improve brushability, and achieve good surface leveling.
Bentonite-based thickeners, thanks to their lamellar structure and surface charge, form a stable three-dimensional network that provides cohesion to the system without negatively affecting its applicability.
Common Limitations of Paint Thickeners
In paint and coating formulations, traditional thickeners pose several technical challenges that can compromise both the stability and the applicability of the final product.
One of the most frequent issues is the need to use high concentrations of the thickener to achieve the desired rheological effect, which can increase formulation costs and affect sustainability. In addition, some thickeners are incompatible with certain resin systems, leading to flocculation, phase separation, or viscosity loss over time.

This natural mineral, rich in montmorillonite, develops a lamellar structure that, when dispersed in liquid media, forms three-dimensional networks capable of stabilizing the system without excessively increasing viscosity.
Its effectiveness as a rheological thickener is based on:

- Controlled thixotropy, which improves brushability and application

- Industrial coatings: In environments such as automotive, machinery, or metal structures, they ensure precise and stable rheological control, preventing application defects and improving finish uniformity. Their ease of dispersion also contributes to more efficient processes.
- Construction materials: In putties, leveling pastes, and technical mortars, they provide controlled thixotropy, improve workability, and prevent water bleeding. This enables homogeneous and easy-to-apply mixes, even under demanding site conditions.
- Well drilling (drilling fluids): Bentonite is widely used as a rheology control additive in drilling fluids. It improves viscosity, solids suspension, and well stability, optimizing performance in exploration and production operations.
- Greases and lubricants: In grease formulations, bentonite acts as a non-soap thickener, providing high thermal and mechanical resistance. This allows the manufacture of lubricants with excellent stability and long-lasting properties, even under extreme conditions.
